ABOUT AYA MOUG
Aya Moug is an industrial designer and artist based in Dubai, known for her sustainable approach to custom-made sculptural furniture, art, and organic textures. With a background in fine arts and interior design from Cairo and Florence, and a Master’s in Industrial Design from Central Saint Martins in London, Aya brings together ancient craft, material innovation, and contemporary aesthetics.
In her pursuit of environmental design, Aya developed her first innovative biomaterial, Byblos, a plant-based material made from papyrus, created as a sustainable alternative to stone and marble. This material lies at the heart of her design philosophy: reviving ancient traditions to shape the future of sustainable living.
Her work moves between disciplines, crafting one of a kind pieces that are both functional and expressive. Each piece tells a story rooted in culture, nature, and the power of slow, intentional making.
Aya’s work has been recognized by LVMH, the Cairo Design Award, and COP28, and featured in AD Middle East, Identity, and Cosmopolitan. In 2024, she was named one of the Sustainable Heroes of the Year in the UAE.
Through her studio, she continues to shape a new sustainable era, one that honours heritage while pioneering the future of design.
ABOUT BYBLOS
Byblos is a material innovation brand that transforms papyrus plants grown along the Nile shores in Egypt into a versatile, plant-based sustainable biomaterial. Known for its strength and longevity, papyrus is not only one of the most efficient and economical natural pollution filters, but also among the cheapest methods for treating wastewater.
Byblos reintroduces this ancient plant in a modern form, offering both hard and soft material finishes that are castable or mouldable without joints allowing seamless, sculptural forms to emerge naturally. The resulting biomaterial is a cost-effective and environmentally conscious alternative to wood, stone, and marble.
Applications include custom furniture, wall panels, floor and wall tiles, bathroom fixtures, and other surfaces or objects across industrial and consumer markets.
Collaborations: Studio Aya Moug invites partnerships with architects, designers, and institutions seeking to explore innovative, sustainable solutions through locally sourced, low-impact materials. Each collaboration is a step toward redefining luxury through environmental responsibility and cultural heritage.
